Now in its 11th year of operation, EPIC Academy is a neighborhood charter high school in the South Chicago community that sets extraordinary standards for our students’ post-secondary success.  With 500 students, we embrace the challenge of public education to develop every student’s resolve to reach his or her full potential, regardless of the odds.  We provide an entrepreneurial team atmosphere that attracts mission-driven individuals who will do whatever it takes to ensure our students’ success.

EPIC’s student demographics are as follows: 96% Free/reduced lunch, 21% Students with IEPs, and 13% English Language Learners, with the average 9th grader entering on the 6th-grade academic level. Position Overview

The development and communications assistant will support the Director of Development and Communications and the Capital Campaign Director with external communications, fundraising and marketing purchases, donor prospecting, maintaining information in the donor database, gift acknowledgments, and list creation. The person in this role will also assist with planning special events.

This is a hybrid position with at least two days per week working on-site. Flexibility to work some evenings and occasional weekends for special events is required.

Reports to: Director of Development and Communications

Roles & Responsibilities

Support the Director of Development and Communications in executing the communications and development strategy.

Assist with the writing and/or design of materials to support EPIC Academy’s annual fund and capital campaigns communications that may include: website updates, social media posts, emails, and donor acknowledgment letters.

Use ethical storytelling techniques to assist with collecting student and staff stories for use in external communications.

Have the ability to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization.

Assist with special events. Duties may include assisting with updating the guest lists, adding information to the database, communicating with guests via email, making purchases for events, attending some planning meetings, and providing day-of support.

Assist with school photography needs.

Assist with prospect research.

Assist the Director of Development and Communications and Capital Campaign Director with running reports in updating information in the donor database
Other duties as assigned by the Director of Development and Communications.

Key Skills and Competencies:

Bachelor’s degree required. Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, public relations, or nonprofit management preferred.

The ideal candidate should have 1-2 years of experience in fundraising or communications (this experience can be via an internship or volunteer role).

The candidate should have skills related to project management and administrative support. Event coordination skills are a plus.

The ideal candidate has an interest in social justice and/or education.

The ideal candidate will have experience working with diverse populations.

Knowledge of Google products, Canva, and email marketing software is a plus.

Database experience is a plus.


$37,000 – $47,000
